How we can help keep plastic out of the Ocean

We all walk around and act like it isn’t something we have to worry about, but it is. We all make a difference to this earth and affect it in one way or another. Therefore, we all need to work together to keep it clean and healthy – that includes the oceans!

Why is plastic bad for the ocean?

What most people don’t know or don’t care to think about is the fact that plastic cannot be absorbed back into the earth. Due to this it ends up in the oceans, killing our wildlife. It takes more than 400 years to degrade so it is no shock that turtles getting their heads caught in the plastic that keeps our cans together, fish swimming and getting stuck in cans and even seals dying as they have got a plastic bag stuck round their neck. It needs to stop!

How much plastic is in the ocean?

Scientists estimate that eight million metric tons of plastic ends up in our oceans each year. That is ridiculous. Just to put it into perspective there is a Garbage truck full of plastic being dumped into the ocean every minute. If that doesn’t shock you then nothing will.

What can we use instead of plastic?

The harmful plastic that is being dumped into our ocean is called polyethylene (PE), but there are now Polylactic acid (PLA) products that is being used as a plastic replacement. It can be recycled and breaks down preventing harm to our ocean or sea life.

At Takeaway Packaging we offer a wide range of Eco-friendly products that won’t harm anyone, sea life or humans and after reading all of this do you not want to help make a difference? You can’t ignore this forever. So why not take a look at our website and see how something so simple as checking that you use PLA not PE will help prevent all of this mess in the ocean.

True or False: Hot Drinks Cool You Down?

So, it seems that the weather has just turned bitterly cold!

We fully accept that we’ve had a fantastically hot summer, so don’t think we’re complaining here.

Despite that we’re still holding out for that extra heatwave here at Takeaway Packaging HQ, which, apparently, is just around the corner…

Anyway, while the usual morning rounds of tea and coffee were being served up earlier this week, a conversation started up about the warming effects of a nice cuppa, brew, whatever you call a hot drink in your area.

It wasn’t long before this was bitterly contested debate and a curveball was thrown right into the mix along the lines of:

“Well if that’s true, how come hot drinks cool you down when you’re too hot!?”

Now, we like a bit of healthy debate, as does the next person, but what we like even more is mythbusting!

So is it true that hot drinks cool you down?

Well we did some research, and here’s what we found…

Allegedly, hot liquids kickstart your sweat glands, and it’s this trigger that causes our bodies to cool down.

Usually, scientific studies and journals will conclude, not-so-surprisingly, that cold drinks lower your core temperature, more than hot drinks, and you should opt for cold when feeling hot.

What is certain, however, is how important sweating is as a means to stay cool.

One angle of thought, purported by the University of Ottawa’s School of Human Kinetics, is that there are temperature-sensing receptors in the throat and on your tongue that can trigger sweating.

When detecting hot liquid, these receptors trigger the body’s natural cooling response.

In this respect, the hot liquid will contribute towards your body’s cooling mechanism and you’ll enter into a state of cool down, so yes, hot liquids will help to cool you down.

The important point to note here is whether your sweat will evaporate once produced.

If you’re in a particularly hot and humid environment, i.e. where the sweat won’t evaporate, then a hot drink won’t do the trick.

The reason being that sweat is a release of heat and if it’s being produced regardless, then the hot drink will have no additional impact and you’re better off sipping on something cold.

You are ‘cooler’ once you have sweated and the sweat has evaporated – wearing airy, breathable clothes will cater for this.

So, if you’re a bit hot, then drinking a hot cup of tea may serve you well in your quest to cool down.

But if you’re really hot, and there’s no chance of your sweat evaporating, then it’s not going to do anything.

So, in conclusion, it depends.

Iced coffee anyone?

Ultimately whether it’s hot or cold, sweltering or frozen, the drinks on offer year round don’t have to follow the normal conventions of the changing seasons.

A dynamic offering of drinks to enjoy in or to take away will keep customers coming back for more!

You could even try a completely contrarian approach and turn your seasonal offering completely on its head!

Get in touch today to chat about the many takeaway drinks businesses we’ve been helping, doing things a little different is bound to get you talked about!

A Brief History of Chopsticks: Dos & Dont’s
chopsticks diner

Chopsticks have been around for centuries and, of course, they’re ubiquitous in Asia.

Actually, the sticks as we would recognise them today go back as far as the late Shang Dynasty.

In case you didn’t know, that was 16th-11th century BC, so just the other day…

In the early days, the Chinese word for Chopsticks was “zhu” 筯, and during that time, the tyrannical King Zhou ordered his craftsmen to make chopsticks out of elephant’s teeth which were deemed to be of utmost luxury in early Chinese culture.

chopsticks beef soup

The rise of chopsticks versus early versions of the spoon which were just as prevalent in very early Asian culture, is largely thanks to the rise of wheat!

Millet and other such grains used to be the staple for most early Chinese meals, but as the growing appeal of wheat continued, so to did wheat-flour foods such as noodles and dumplings.

With a lot more in the way of noodles and dumplings knocking around, chopsticks were clearly a much better tool than the humble spoon.

There’s an old Chinese proverb which gives testimony to the above: ‘you are what you wheat’.

Ok, sorry about that – here’s what you should know about using them:

chopsticks etiquette

Dos & Don’ts

It seems to be that chopsticks are no longer the novelty that they used to be and Asian restaurants are far less likely to assumptively provide silverware to their Western diners.

So with a modest 7,000 years worth of dining history behind them, there must be some etiquette rules around using chopsticks, right?

Well, there are loads!

Here’s a quick run down of the main ones that should see you through to the end of your meal and warmly welcomed back to dine again in the future.

Do take food from a serving bowl and place it in your bowl before eating – patience will serve hungry diners well here!

Don’t wave your chopsticks around or use them to point or gesticulate at someone.

Do place them on top of/across your bowl horizontally when not using them but DON’T cross them – crossing chopsticks is very taboo and a symbol of death…

chopsticks sharing

Don’t stick them into your food vertically as this is reminiscent of placing incense in rice at the altar during a funeral!

Don’t pick through food with your chopsticks looking for which item to choose from a shared serving plate, have conviction and commit.

Don’t suck the tip of your chopsticks – yes, even if there’s some amazingly tasty sauce left on it! This will see you ridiculed in front of everyone as someone lacking a family education…

Do hold the bowl in your hand and use your chopsticks to push rice into your mouth, if you need to.

Don’t do that if you’re in Korea.

Do NOT pierce pieces of food with your chopsticks, this is very rude!

Don’t pass food to another person chopstick to chopstick, that’s also a funeral ritual…

Don’t break apart wooden chopsticks and rub them together – this is because people would often do this with cheap wooden chopsticks that splinter. Doing so with any pair of chopsticks tells the host you think their chopsticks are cheap!

Remember those and you should be just fine!

5 Vegan Takeaways That Will Blow Your Mind
vegan gyros

You can’t fail to notice the huge surge in demand for vegan food over the last 3 years.

Whether it’s popup food markets, big-chain supermarkets or local cafés, vegan food and substitutes can be found everywhere.

This surging market is still extremely buoyant, and, arguably, the demand is still higher than the supply.

This is great news for food retailers as it means they can diversify their offerings if they’re not already catering to vegan customers.

In many cases, the food outlet doesn’t need to be specifically vegan or even vegetarian.

Most vegan dishes can be served up by subbing in tofu and subbing out meat.

The key message of this article is that vegans too can enjoy fast food to go, hangover food, comforting stodge, carb day, cheat day, whatever you want to call it!

If you’re considering of offering some vegan dishes but aren’t quite sure where to start, here’s 5 spots that we think are nailing it.

Check out the following list of scrummy vegan takeaway dishes.

We seriously encourage you to try them and use them to inspire your own dishes!

The Problem with Recycling Cups
Paper Cups for Coffee

There are so many misconceptions surrounding the recycling of plastic packaging. Many brands tend to promote the fact that their cups are recyclable, but currently, less than 1 percent of coffee cups are actually recycled. Why? Because it is extremely difficult to recycle cups that are lined with plastic.

Paper Cups - Takeaway Packaging
Recycling Plastic Lined Coffee Cups

Unfortunately, cups that are lined with plastic cannot straightforwardly be recycled.

The polyethylene that lines a coffee cup is tightly bonded to the paper in order to make the cup waterproof and able to contain liquids. To recycle a plastic lined coffee cup, the lining needs to be separated from the cup.

It doesn’t end there…

By the time the cup reaches a recycling bin, it has most likely already been contaminated with a liquid.

Standard recycling plants cannot recycle anything that has come into contact with food or drinks; there are only a select few specialist facilities in the UK that can separate the lining from a cup that has come into contact with liquids.

One of the biggest issues surrounding disposable plastic lined coffee cups is their alleged recyclability. These cups are technically recyclable, but the vast majority of coffee cups do not end up being recycled. Most will end up in landfill, but consumers are often not aware of this.

The Solution

There is a solution! Cups do not have to be lined with plastic, they can also be lined with Ingeo™ PLA.

Ingeo™ is a biodegradable polyester derived from renewable plant material. The material itself is completely biodegradable, compostable and has a carbon footprint up to 75% less than traditional packaging materials such as PS or PET.

We can manufacture cups with a PLA lining, these cups are also fully biodegradable and commercially compostable. When commercially composted, the lining of this cup does not need to be removed. We can produce these cups in your desired styles, sizes and we can print them with your chosen artwork and logo.

Advantages of switching to Eco-Friendly Packaging
Black EcoCup
The Advantages

There are so many advantages of switching over to eco-friendly food packaging. Plastic packaging is currently at the forefront of criticism due to the damaging effect it has on our environment. At Takeaway Packaging, we are committed to driving this message as a business. We are encouraging customers to take some time and look at the future friendly alternatives available to them.

EcoCup - Clear Cup
Biodegradable Smoothie Cups, Shop via Takeaway Packaging

We’ve recently introduced a new range of completely compostable and biodegradable packaging which, so far, has gone down very well with the environmentally conscious business we deal with. Its important to us to spread the word about this range as not only does it offer a sustainable solution, our products are also extremely affordable.

Switching to compostable packaging aids in lowering your companies carbon footprint. Plastics can take up to 400 years to decompose, and some plastics will never break down. We use materials that are both sustainable and kind to our environment, Ingeo™ PLA being our go-to. Our products made with PLA will decompose completely in less than 12 weeks when commercial composted.

What is PLA made from?

Ingeo™ PLA is a biodegradable and compostable substance that quite literally is ‘Made from Plants’! The material is produced from naturally occurring and renewable resources found in plants, such as corn starch.

Ingeo™ has very similar physical characteristics to plastic, which makes it perfect for the takeaway packaging products we produce.

We use this material in two different ways

Our first use of Ingeo™ PLA is as a Lining. Coffee cups needs to be lined to increase their water resistance and deter leaking.

We line our coffee cups with PLA as opposed to plastic because it works in the same way, but the lining does not need to be removed in order for it to decompose. Being that Ingeo™ is a compostable and biodegradable substance, cups can be commercially compostable without the trouble of removing the lining first.

Coffee Cups that are made from plants ? Shop Online now!

A post shared by Takeaway Packaging (@takeawaypackaging) on

Our second use of PLA is as a ‘Bioplastic’. Ingeo™ can also be used to manufacture products such as clear cups, deli containers, and even straws.

These products look like plastic, but they are fully compostable and biodegradable.

Using eco-friendly packaging will add merit to your business. You are sure to stand out from competitors if you are the only one using future friendly packaging. Our eco-friendly alternatives give you the chance to shout about the work you are doing to prevent the use of single plastic packaging.

Get in touch with us today for a full consultation on switching to eco friendly alternatives, we are more than happy to assist you.

What is the Edible Water Bottle?
Edible Water Bottle - Takeaway Packaging
Have you heard of the edible water bottle?

The ‘Edible Water Bottle’ is a blob-like bottle, made from Sodium Alginate Gel. Skipping Rocks Lab created them in an attempt to produce a more environmentally friendly alternative to single use plastic bottles. They have named their creation Ooho.

“The aim of Ooho is to provide the convenience of plastic bottles while limiting the environmental impact.”

Ooho Features
  • It is 100% made of Plants & Seaweed
  • Biodegradable in 4-6 weeks, just like a piece of fruit
  • Edible can be flavoured and coloured
  • Fresh (shelf life of a few days)5x less CO₂, 9x less Energy vs PET
  • Cheaper than plastic

This product has risen to popularity over the last few months and has already appeared at many events across the world, including London, San Francisco and Boston.

Alternatives to Single Use Plastic Bottles
There are many other alternatives to single use plastic bottles, view some popular choices below!

Plastic
Reusable plastic bottles are an option, but if you are striving for an eco-friendly future (like us!), we’d avoid plastic all together, including reusable plastic items.

Glass
Glass is another viable alternative to single use plastic bottles. Glass can be recycled, and reused time and time again. Of course, glass is heavy and likely to break if dropped.

Metal
Metal water bottles are one of the most practical options you’ll find in your searches. They are both reusable and recyclable. You can find metal water bottles all over, especially in coffee shops such as Starbucks & Pret A Manger.

Compostable Coffee Cups ‘Made from Plants’
Cups Made From Plants

We are sure by now you have seen our range of compostable coffee cups ‘Made from Plants’. The clue is in the name, these cups are made from plants!

Our paper is sourced from responsibly managed forests. We line the paper with Ingeo™ bioplastic. This lining is produced from a naturally occurring material in plants and has a significantly lower carbon footprint than the fossil fuel-based polymers that generally line packaging.

This innovation of turning plants into plastic allows us to exclude non-renewable resources (such as oil) from the production of EcoCups.
See how these cups compost over time? Standard plastic-based cups are not degradable and will not compost like these cups.

7 Examples of Ingenious Design
Ingenious design

Examples of great design are all around us and many form the backbone of our day-to-day living.

As keen enthusiasts for creative and functional design we’ve been exploring the very greatest examples, that is, the ingenious designs that have shaped the world, transformed onerous tasks into doddles, and those that are simply great in their own way!

design ideas

The Juicy Salif

In case you weren’t aware, The Juicy Salif is the actual name for the transformative and wondrous groovy metal lemon squeezer found in homes across the globe.

Phillipe Starck’s famous 1990 design, is one of the best in its class for industrial design and has even been exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Modeled on the shape of a squid and cast in polished aluminium, this device is a dream for anyone wanting to extract the soury goodness from citrus fruits.

Function and form standing and excelling together – if you haven’t used one, you haven’t lived.

Dyson Cool Fan

James Dyson is undoubtedly a pioneer.

Tucked away in his top secret location which is constantly under threat from undercover employees (moles) planted by competitors, he can’t stop coming up with amazing inventions.

Of course, the bagless, cyclone vacuum cleaner was an absolute game-changer, but what we really want to celebrate is his bladeless fans!

The Dyson Cool Fan is a sensational device that does exactly what it proposes while looking great, blowing our minds (and hair) and keeping fingers and cats safer than ever!

Rotate, speed up, slow down, this piece of tech is as revolutionary in function as its beautiful zen-like circular design (or elongated if you get the larger model).

What’s more, the latest models claim to be 75% quieter than their previous versions.

Coca-Cola Glass Bottle

In the pursuit of creating something of great recognition, the iconic Coca-Cola glass contour bottle was created.

It dates back all the way to 1915 when designer Earl R. Dean attempted to design something which could be recognised even in the dark as well as paying homage to the product inside.

The resulting shape that we’re so fond of today – influenced by the ingredients – stems from the shape a cocoa pod which Dean discovered in his encyclopedia, having first ruled out images of the cocoa leaf and Kola nut.

iPod, iPhone, iPad

Game. Changed.

Apple have been rocking the world for decades now.

Thanks to Sir Jonathan Ive – the quite-rightly exalted industrial designer behind these products – Apple have soared to become one of the largest (and wealthiest) companies on the planet.

The products are graceful in both design and user experience.

The touch-screen interface makes for a multi-sensory approach with softly gliding screens and pinching motions that serve to enhance the simple, understated elegance of the hardware.

Apple are almost guaranteed to make any list in the modern age relating to great design.

Thermos Vacuum Flask

Sir James Dewar, chemist and physicist, invented the vacuum flask in 1892.

As many of us will have learned in school science classes, the flask consists of two walls that have air vacuumed out from between them to keep liquids either hot or cold, for longer.

Unfortunately, the tale turns a little cold…

You see, Dewar never patented his invention, leaving it wide open to the German company, Thermos GmbH, who snapped up the idea and began manufacturing it themselves in 1904.

Once in production, they patented the design and left Dewar with no rights to the product.

Weber Barbecue Grill

George A. Stephen’s 1950 design can still be found in gardens and garden centres today.

Weber Brothers Metal Works was metal fabricator that primarily made buoys.

While working there, Stephen – being a dab hand in the kitchen –  was frustrated with his open-brick grill, because he felt that it produced uneven heat and too much smoke.

Moreover, the open top allowed too much wind to blow ashes into his food!

Not one to be easily defeated, and being the metal works bright spark that he was, Stephen took half a buoy and welded three steel legs onto it.

Unbeknownst to Stephen, he’d just revolutionised garden parties, forever!

Weber-Stephen Products Co. was born, and with it, one of the most iconic cooking objects to date!

The Bicylce

There is nothing more efficient than a man, or woman, on a bicycle.

S.S. Wilson, an engineering lecturer at Oxford University, took it upon himself to carry out an efficiency study.

The study was published in Scientific American in 1973.

Wilson found that a person on a bicycle was more efficient than any other animal or machine. Ever.

Now, without trying to blind anyone with science, according to Wilson, a cycling human uses a fifth of the energy as one walking; 0.15 calories per gram of bodyweight per km for cycling, versus 0.75 for walking.

Human efficiency

Casual cyclists travel about 9-12 mph while a person walking travels about 3 mph, resulting in cyclists being 15-20 times more efficient than a person walking (per hour) and about 5 times more efficient than the most efficient animal, which is the American Condor.

Through form and function, the humble push bike is therefore an ingenious design which has remained as effective (and efficient!) as it has timeless and classic.

Let’s talk about Frozen Custard

Frozen Custard is a cold dessert. It’s very similar to ice cream but is made with eggs in addition to cream and sugar. It is usually stored at a warmer temperature than ice cream, and tends to have a denser consistency.

Ice Cream VS Frozen Yoghurt

Soft serve ice creams often have an overrun as large as 100 percent. This means half of the final product produced is composed of air.
When made in a continuous freezer, Frozen Custard can have an overrun of 15 –30 percent, depending on the machine used. Frozen Custard has a similar overrun percentage to Gelato.

Frozen Yoghurt anyone?

Summer is a time for ice cream! But unfortunately, not everyone loves ice cream as much as we do at Takeaway Packaging. We wanted to make sure there’s somewhere for everyone to visit this summer. So, moving on from Ice Cream, here are our favourite Frozen Yoghurt parlours in the UK, along with some facts to keep you amused!

A little bit about Frozen Yoghurt

Frozen Yoghurt, also known as ‘Froyo’ or ‘Frogurt’ is a frozen dessert made from yoghurt and often other dairy products and non-dairy products. Frozen Yoghurt is usually slightly lighter and sharper than ice cream, it’s also far lower in fat due to the use of milk instead of cream. tart
Frozen Yoghurt usually consists of milk solids, a sweetener, milk fat, yoghurt culture, natural/artificial flavouring, and in some cases, natural or artificial colouring.

5 Facts About Frozen Yoghurt

1. Frozen Yoghurt is lower in fat than Ice Cream
2. Frozen Yoghurt looks great in our new biodegradable EcoBowls
3. It was invented in the late 70s, in New England
4. You can purchase Frozen Yoghurt in powdered form

Everything you need for a Coffee Shop Pt 3

We hope you’re ready for part 3 of ‘Everything you need for a Coffee Shop’! Today we are going to focus on the extra packaging items you might find useful for your coffee shop!

Tip #7 Napkins!

Napkins are a really important packaging item for any coffee shop! Whether you’re ordering bespoke or stock, it’s important to remember to stock up. There are many different styles and sizes of napkin to choose from. Here’s a brief breakdown.

PLY

Napkins - Takeaway Packaging

The ply of a napkin refers to the number of layers the napkin is produced from. When purchasing napkins, you’ll usually find that the napkin is 1 Ply, 2 Ply or 3 Ply. The higher the Ply the thicker the napkin.

MATERIAL

The most popular napkin material used in coffee shops is paper. This is mainly because paper napkins are disposable. Environmentally conscious businesses use often use unbleached napkins made up of recycled paper.

SIZE & COLOUR

A Slice Of Cake On Napkins

The possibilities are endless when it comes to colour. When designing your own napkins, you can create your napkin in as many colours as you wish and print them with your logos or artwork. For size, anything from 21cm x 30.5cm to 48cm x 48cm are available. You can also purchase napkins for use in dispensers.

Tip #8 Will you need some cutlery?

If you’re serving food at your coffee shop, whether it be cakes or pastries or sandwiches, it’s also wise to stock some cutlery. There are quite a few different options available to you for cutlery, find out more below

MATERIAL

Wooden

Wooden Cutlery

Hard wooden cutlery is produced from renewable resources and is recyclable and biodegradable. Wooden cutlery is less likely to snap that plastic cutlery.

PLASTIC

Takeaway Packaging - Plastic Cutlery
Plastic Cutlery

With plastic cutlery, you can either go for a cheaper, thinner plastic that is prone to snapping, or you can choose a heavy-duty plastic (like the kind you’ll find in McDonalds). Plastic cutlery is available in a range of colours. Please note that plastic cutlery is not biodegradable or compostable.

Bioplastic PLA

Bioplastic Cutlery
Bioplastic Cutlery

Bioplastic PLA cutlery gives the same physical appearance of heavy-duty plastic cutlery, but it is completely biodegradable and compostable. View our range of Bioplastic Cutlery here.

You’ll also need to decide what cutlery items are best suited for your shop. Knives, Forks and Stirrers are essential, but will you also need Spoons or Tablespoons?

Tip #9 Bags anyone?

Takeaway bags will always come in useful if you’re serving food at your coffee shop. Here are some popular bag designs for cafes and delis.

SOS Grab Bag

Grab Bag

The small size of grab bags makes them great for sandwiches, cakes and pastries. As the name suggests, they are usually used for grab and options. These bags can be branded with your artwork and logos and are also available unbranded. Brand your bags online here.

SOS Tape (or Twist) Handle

SOS Tape Handle Bag
Tape Handle Bag

The SOS style bag is most commonly used by coffee shops, bakeries and deli. Its structure allows for small takeaway boxes and soup cups to sit level inside. These bags can also be branded (see above). For this style of bag, you can either have twists or a tape handle. You can purchase stock bags in a variety of sizes, or you can brand your own and choose your own size. Many shops often have several sizes, but this is entirely down to the nature of your business.

Tip #10 Cup Carriers & Sleeves

Finally, cup carriers & sleeves! These items are completely optional, but we do recommend you offer your customers sleeves if serving drinks in single wall cups.

SLEEVES

Coffee Cup Sleeve
White Sleeve

If you are using unbranded cups, branding your sleeves is a cheaper alternative to getting your name out there. Sleeves can be fully branded with your logo, artwork and colours.

CUP CARRIERS

Cup carriers are handy for customers buying lots of drinks, they come in a variety of structures, see below.
